http://www.miamiherald.com/277/story/42203.htmlCONCERT These boys just wanna have fun BY MICHAEL HAMERSLY mhamersly@MiamiHerald.com
What do Guns 'N Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Jane's Addiction and The Cult have in common, other than creating timeless rock anthems over the past two decades?
The answer: Camp Freddy. No, it's not Friday the 13th meets A Nightmare on Elm Street -- it's a ''covers supergroup,'' the accidental brainchild of singer/actor/model/scenester Donovan Leitch (son of Mellow Yellow '60s icon Donovan).
Inexplicably named after a character in the 1969 Michael Caine film The Italian Job, Camp Freddy was born in 2002 ''out of not having anything better to do than jam'' one night in Los Angeles, says founding member Billy Morrison, whose claim to fame includes stints as The Cult's guitarist and frontman for Circus Diablo. 'Donovan called me and said, `Why don't we get a few friends together and jam at this opening party for a hotel?' ''
Those ''few friends'' included Jane's Addiction members Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney, plus Matt Sorum of Guns 'N Roses. Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver singer Scott Weiland later became the sixth official member.
Little did the guys know the concept would take off so successfully: Their connections and star power helped them enlist rock 'n' roll help over the years from guest artists including Lou Reed, Slash, Steven Tyler and George Clinton.
''Literally up until the day of the show we're always trying to get that one guest people don't expect,'' says Leitch. 'Scott wants to do Van Halen's Ain't Talkin' Bout Love in Miami this weekend, and he's trying to convince [original Van Halen singer] David Lee Roth to come down and do the show.''
Which would fit in nicely with one of the group's mottoes, ''expect the unexpected,'' although Morrison gave a sneak peek at the groups on Camp Freddy's set list -- Ted Nugent, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Damned, David Bowie and The Cult, to name a few. But that's for this show only.
''The audience sees stuff that is never gonna be repeated whenever we play,'' says Morrison. ``Like Brandon Boyd of Incubus singing Whole Lotta Love with Slash on guitar. A 16-year-old kid is there to see the Incubus singer; he doesn't care who Led Zeppelin is.''
It's clearly nothing but fun, or ''music without motives'' -- Camp Freddy's other motto. There are no egos in this band, and every song choice must be agreed upon by every member.
''It's so diplomatic it makes me sick -- totally equal,'' says Morrison. ``If someone doesn't want to do something, we don't do it. I don't think we've ever had an argument. We're all in real bands, so that's where the arguments are. So when you see us smiling onstage, we're really smiling.''
For both Morrison and Leitch, Camp Freddy is somewhat of a dream come true.
''This is my favorite thing to do, like a vacation,'' says Morrison. ``I grew up listening to the Sex Pistols, and I get to play God Save the Queen with Steve Jones. I grew up listening to Lou Reed, and I get to play Venus In Furs with him -- wouldn't you be having a blast?''
Leitch, whose famous family also includes younger sister and Say Anything actress Ione Skye, similarly finds Camp Freddy liberating.
''My dad has always been really supportive, giving me good advice for songwriting, but here it's kind of good to be the underdog,'' he says. ``I get to play with all these amazing musicians from all these bands I grew up loving. It's the ultimate fantasy -- like fantasy football but fantasy music instead.
'I mean, standing back-to-back with Slash, singing Paradise City . . . it seems not real, like, `Are we really onstage now?' ''

From www.6767.comThe Miami trip with Camp Freddy was quick, amazing and a lot of fun. We performed in-between two DJ acts, DJ AM & Travis and Paul Oakenfold. We were totally prepared for the audience to be more of the dance oriented type with plenty of yawns during the rocker set, but they were just fantastic with tons of energy and enthusiasm. It was quite a difference from the TV audiences that I am used to playing for during the Supernova shows. Highlights from the show included Disturbed's David Draiman doing Man in the Box and Whole Lotta Love. Damn, can that boy sing! Loud and strong. Steve Jones joined us for Bodies and also sang it. That was a blast. Doing a Sex Pistols song with a Sex Pistol is kind of the only way to go. Mark McGrath brought it with Cat Scratch Fever and Cantrell with Jailbreak. Billy Duffy joined us for Love Removal with Brett Scallions on the mic. It was a killer 90 minute set and after we all kind of split off into different directions into the Miami night. I hosted a party at Mansion and was joined by Jerry, followed by a stop by the new spot, Set. The rest of the night was all about texts flying around between everybody saying, "we are here... come here... no, wait, we left there, now we are here... stop by this..." All in all I think we hit about five places joining up with Donovan, Mark, Duffy, Sorum and all. Naturally, I didn't sleep so when I got home, my nap turned into a 12 hour slumber. Now I am just about to get packing for Vegas. Four days there to do a few things with Versace and then my travel for the month is done.
